- University spin-offs are by no means uniform. This paper tries to answer two research questions. What is the distribution of university spin-offs in Japan by industry? What kind of specific characteristics do university spin-offs in different industries have? The research is based on an original questionnaire survey sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). We find that the Japanese university spin-offs have different difficulties, different business plans and so on depending on an industry sector.
