- This paper proposes a basic direction in the future development of the Strategic Group Theory through the re-classification of the representative previous studies which have different view points. It is generally believed that Hunt (1972) found the concept of the strategic group and Porter's strategic group map (1980) using this concept made it popular. Consequently, it can be said that the best-known definition of the strategic group is the one by Porter. On the other hand, there are considerable amount of strategic group studies with different view points from the studies which were derived from the Industrial Organization Theory. However, these studies look as if different research interests, approaches and perspectives are mixed-up amongst them. The paper offers to conduct a two-step classification on the previous strategic group studies. As first step, it conducts a two-dimensional classification according to time (synchronic/diachronic) and type of study (normative/descriptive). Then, as second step, it proposes a third dimension, adding the difference of perspectives (objective/subjective) to the classification. Through this examination, this paper emphasizes the significance of developing a type of dynamic strategic group study which takes subjective cognition of managers into consideration. Fierce competitions emerge in many industries, and are changing with complexity by many players within the industries these days. In such situation, developing a strategic group theory in the type of dynamic-subjective perspective is useful for researchers and managers to effectively understand complicated competitive circumstances in their industry. Additionally, it can potentially provide companies with recommended directions to its strategic behaviors.
